We are a group of anthropologists, social scientists, and historians conducting research on the relationship between knowledge and “progress”. We understand progress to be the yardstick with which many societies measure whether their future is better than their present and past. Can we produce knowledge that enables people to discuss what this yardstick is and does? Can we produce knowledge that helps people to explore what kind of ‘betterment’ is actually important for them?
