The German National Science and Humanities Council Working Group ‘Science and Democracy’ has concluded its work and the Council has passed the Impulse Paper ‘Science in liberal-democratically organised societies’. You can download the paper here: https://www.wissenschaftsrat.de/download/2026/3575-26.pdf?__blob=publicationFile&v=6 (in German)
The Impulse Paper is a call for action and dialogue to the entire academic system to reflect how its core activities contribute to and are shaped by being situated within liberal-democratic societies – and what can be done across disciplines and across status groups to protect the autonomy of the system and its manifold roles in society. A particular emphasis is placed on the role of the 2.9 million students in Germany and their ability to shape the relationship between Wissenschaft and society for a future to come.
